Any employee that has to deal with customers on a regular basis has to deal with an endless amount of crap. Most manifest themselves in harmless insults, but every once in a while, someone crosses WAY over the line.
Some customers, because they are people like any others, make mistakes. They might have had a bad day, feel overly emotional, and take it out on the nearest person, who just happens to be their waiter. Some people are just unrealistic in their demands, and expect the impossible. And of course, there will be a few customers out there that are just idiots, plain and simple.
Working in customer service and trying to smile and nod while someone screams at you over the fact that bread has “too much bread” in it, can definitely be a unique challenge…
Waiters, cashiers, bartenders, and retail employees are all expected to follow the “customer is always right” mentality even if that means the customer is telling you that the sky is full of green sparkles, or that chicken wings are “usually” vegetarian.
Most of the time, customer service employees face a lot of abuse and shrug it off with a smile because if you start to take angry customers personally, you’ll crumble into a puddle of despair.
However, sometimes a particularly aggressive or rude customer will choose the wrong day to mess with someone just trying to do their job, and customer service workers all have a least one story where they might’ve completely lost their cool.
We found a video where a Family Dollar store manager hits an unruly customer with everything he could find.
You can watch the video below:
While some people asked for him to be fired and others justified his moves because after all, he was fighting a biological male!
These stories are reminders that if you get physically threatened at work (or anywhere, for that matter), always take it seriously.
What should you do if a customer flips out on you, or worse, gets physical? Call for help from your supervisor or co-workers quickly when a customer starts to get loud or rowdy. If things get out of hand, try to stay calm, and call the police immediately.
