Ashley Webb, Democrat Running to Replace Graham Platner in Maine Senate Race — Wait Until You Hear What Qualifies Him for U.S. Senate (VIDEO)
Maine Democrats are still scrambling to put together a credible challenge to Republican Sen. Susan Collins after Graham Platner’s campaign fell apart amid serious personal allegations.
Several candidates have jumped into the race to replace him, and one of them is Ashley Webb.
Webb is running as a grassroots Democrat focused on healthcare access, infrastructure, and holding government accountable. He’s handling much of his own campaign and has been showing up in small towns across the state.
During a recent debate on News Center Maine, the candidates were asked what qualifies them to serve in the U.S. Senate.
Webb’s answer stood out.
Video:
He said he’s a songwriter who writes his own books. He also stressed that he wouldn’t lie to people or deceive them.
That was the core of his pitch for why Mainers should send him to Washington.
The debate itself didn’t do much to excite Democratic voters. Observers described it as halting and ineffective, with candidates struggling to land clean hits on Collins and offering scattered responses on major issues. One summary of the whole thing basically boiled down to “congratulations on your reelection, Sen. Susan Collins.”
Other names in the field include former state Sen. Troy Jackson, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, and public health official Dr. Nirav Shah. None of them appear to be generating much enthusiasm so far.
Webb’s campaign presents him as someone who will fight relentlessly for regular Mainers and refuses to be silenced. He’s emphasized showing up in person and building relationships at the local level.
But when it comes to the basic question of why he belongs in the Senate, the songwriting background is what he chose to highlight.
After everything that happened with Platner, Democrats in Maine are clearly still searching for someone who can actually connect with voters and make a strong case. So far, the field is not inspiring much confidence that they’ve found that person.
Sen. Collins has a long record of working across party lines and remains one of the most popular Republicans in the country. If this is the alternative Democrats are offering, her path to another term looks pretty clear.
