Daily Beast Editor Reveals He Was Literally Next Door to the WHCA Dinner Shooter — And This Is the Security Failure He Noted
Even the Daily Beast got something right for once.
Their executive editor, Hugh Dougherty, stayed in room 10235 at the Washington Hilton — right next door to the shooter, Cole Allen, the 31-year-old who tried to storm the White House Correspondents’ Dinner with a shotgun, handgun, and knives.
Dougherty couldn’t get back to his room for hours because the hallway was swarming with cops. They told him the area was now an FBI crime scene and they were waiting on a judge to get a warrant to search the room next to his. That’s when it hit him: he had literally slept next door to the man who wanted to turn the dinner into a massacre.
But here’s the part that should enrage every American: the security was so nonexistent that a gunman could check in, bring a disassembled long gun, assemble it in his room, and walk right down to the event where President Trump, Vice President Vance, and top administration officials were gathered.
Dougherty laid it out plainly:
– Nobody checked his luggage when he arrived Friday afternoon.
– Nobody checked his colleague’s luggage on Saturday at 5 p.m. — no magnetometers, no hand searches, nothing.
– He walked up and down from the 10th floor all day with zero stops, no ID checks beyond initial check-in, and no frisks.
– To get into the dinner, he simply flashed a ticket. It could’ve been a photocopy.
– Another colleague got texted a ticket and breezed in unchecked right up to the magnetometers — the same ones Allen sprinted past with his gun.
This wasn’t a minor oversight. This was catastrophic failure at an event packed with the President and the presidential line of succession. After two prior assassination attempts on Trump, basic protocols like luggage screening and proper ID verification were apparently treated as suggestions.
The shooter traveled by train from Torrance, California, checked into the Hilton as a regular guest, assembled his weapons in an unsecured area, and nearly pulled off a nightmare. One Secret Service agent took a round to the vest and survived. The rest was stopped only by quick action once the shooting started.
Dougherty himself noted the layers of failure and asked the obvious question: How on earth could someone with a disassembled long gun check into a hotel where the President was speaking?
The answer is simple — lax, complacent security in a city run by people who still refuse to treat the very real threats against Donald Trump with the seriousness they deserve.
President Trump has faced more hatred and more attempts on his life than any modern president, all because he refuses to bend the knee to the swamp. Yet time and again, the system around him — whether it’s the Secret Service, event planners, or hotel security — seems asleep at the wheel until bullets start flying.
Trump already announced the dinner will be rescheduled soon. White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, who has been cracking the whip on Secret Service improvements since Butler, will no doubt demand real changes this time.
This incident should be a national wake-up call. No more half-measures. No more “good enough” security for the man millions of Americans voted to lead this country. The radical left’s demonization of Trump has real consequences, and the people in charge of protecting him need to start acting like it.
The shooter is in custody facing serious federal charges. But the failures exposed by a Daily Beast editor sleeping next door to the assassin prove one thing: America cannot afford any more negligence. President Trump keeps fighting for us. It’s time the system around him starts fighting just as hard to keep him safe.
