Screenshots Before and After: Wikipedia Deletes J.D. Vance’s Wartime Medals and Awards

Wikipedia has become embroiled in a political dispute after a single user edited U.S. Senator J.D. Vance’s page, removing references to his military awards earned during his deployment to Iraq. The edits, made between July 28th and July 30th, 2024, deleted mentions of the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, and Navy and Marine Corps Sea Service Deployment Ribbon. This move has sparked outrage, as it is seen as part of a broader political battle between Democrats and Republicans.

On July 28th, Vance’s Wikipedia page listed his military service record as follows:

Allegiance: United States
Branch/Service: United States Marine Corps
Years of Service: 2003–2007
Rank: Corporal
Unit: 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing
Battles/Wars: Iraq War
Awards:
Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal
Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal
Global War on Terrorism Service Medal
Iraq Campaign Medal
Navy and Marine Corps Sea Service Deployment Ribbon This record reflected his four-year service in the Marine Corps, during which he was deployed to Iraq as part of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. The awards listed were standard recognitions for service members who participated in the Iraq War and other related operations during that period. Screenshots before and after:

So the media went after the real soldier and decided to protect the fake one!

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz falsely claimed that he carried weapons “in war” in a resurfaced clip that JD Vance blasted this week as another example of the Democratic vice presidential candidate using “stolen valor.”
Critics were quick to point out that Walz, who retired from the National Guard in 2005, never actually served in a combat zone.

“When the United States Marine Corps, when the United States of America, asked me to go to Iraq to serve my country, I did it,” Vance said Wednesday at the Shelby, Mich., police department. Vance served as a combat correspondent for the U.S. Marine Corps from 2003 to 2007 and deployed to Iraq for six months in 2005.

Vance continued, “When Tim Walz was asked by his country to go to Iraq, do you know what he did? He dropped out of the Army and allowed his unit to go without him. … I think it’s shameful.” At a different event, Vance used the phrase “stolen valor” to describe his accusations against Walz.

I agree with you somewhat. I’m a Viet Nam era veteran but I was not in combat or even in-country. I received the campaign ribbon/award. But, Vance was in a combat zone. Besides if you’re going to tell me I can’t carry a weapon you carried in war and you’re a liar, you don’t have a leg to stand on.

Submit your request, too.
