Violent protests and international condemnation had already followed Trump’s move Wednesday, when he also committed to moving the US Embassy to the holy city.
Both Palestinians and Israelis claim Jerusalem as their capital.
Some Palestinian factions called for three “days of rage” to protest the decision, culminating Friday. At least 49 people were injured Thursday during protests over Trump’s decision, the Palestinian Red Crescent said.
Trump’s move has roiled Muslims around the world and loomed large during prayers on Friday, Islam’s holy day.
The governments of Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Pakistan, Malaysia and Indonesia were among those to speak out against Trump’s decision.
The situation escalated and now Israel’s military said its aircraft bombed militant targets in Gaza and the Palestinian Health Ministry said at least 25 people were wounded or dead in the strikes!
The Israeli military said it had carried out the strikes on a Hamas training camp and on a weapons depot in response to rockets fired earlier from Gaza at Israeli towns. Witnesses told Reuters that most of the wounded were residents of a building near the camp.
Of two reported rockets fired from the Gaza Strip, the first was claimed to have been intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome defense system. A second fell short of Israeli territory according to reports in Israeli media.
Do you think that this could cause a brand new conflict between Israel and Palestine?
