Fashion Blogs Accused First Daughter Ivanka Trump Of ‘Cultural Appropriation’
I refuse to believe that anyone is really offended by ‘cultural appropriation. But, Ivanka – cultural appropriation? Indian media criticized Ivanka Trump’s fashion choices during her entrepreneurship summit trip to India this week. Fashion blogs accused Ivanka Trump of cultural appropriation after she wore outfits that mimicked the country’s fashions.
Indian website DailyO slammed the president’s daughter for “superficial assimilation of culture” and called her “[B]otoxed Barbie.”
The first daughter drew criticism for donning a $3,500 dress covered with Oriental-style flowers by British label Erdem and two outfits by American designer Tory Burch that recalled Indian embroidery and patterns. It was rumored she was going to wear a sari gown presented to her as a welcome gift by Bollywood favorite Neeta Lulla one evening, but she instead opted for a Tory Burch “floral gown that looked like a ‘me-too’ of a Kashmiri pheran,” the website wrote.
The Daily O lambasted the Burch number and described it to be ‘the ‘me-too’ of a Kashmiri pheran for the prime minister’s banquet at the Taj Falaknuma Palace.’
‘It referenced India with the embroidery, but in reality looked like a cheap brand ripping off designer Rahul Mishra,’ the Daily O said of the jacket.
Bandana Tewari, editor of Vogue India said: “If Ivanka’s clothes are to be an acknowledgment of an ancient and rich culture like ours, especially as she arrives as a dignitary, then the sartorial ‘tribute’ should be authentic in its intention. We would rather see her wear a hand-woven sari made in our country or a handmade gown made in her own country. But to hybridize the two, in an era of unfiltered diversity, is a superfluous nod to half-acceptance.”
Cultural appropriation is such a stupid concept. It’s so beyond reason all this extreme sensitivity. Quite hypocritical as well. Ivanka looked great in the outfits she chose. I was impressed. Seemed respectful. In a normal world that would be considered the highest of compliments. But the left exists in an alternate universe of anger, whining, envy, and pettiness.
The ignorance and stupidity, the lack of intelligence of people who would stoop to even thinking this is incredible.
