Armed Teacher In Custody After Report Of Shots At School
An armed teacher has been arrested after shots were fired at a high school in a small town in northern Georgia.
The Dalton Police Department reported that “shot or shots” had been fired at Dalton High School just after 11:15 a.m. on the department’s official Twitter account.
Minutes later, DPD added that the armed suspect was barricaded inside a classroom at the school and urged parents not to come to the school.
Police in Dalton tweeted that no children were hurt or were in danger. Police spokesman Bruce Frazier tells The Associated Press that the scene is secure. Police are not immediately saying what happened inside the school.
Police say the school has been evacuated and students have been taken to the Northwest Georgia Center. Police are advising parents to go there to pick them up.
One student was injured after sustaining an ankle injury while running inside the school during the building evacuation, the Dalton Police Department tweeted. No faculty or staff were reported injured in the incident.
A police spokesperson told WRCB-TV the teacher had a gun but no other details were immediately available.
Dalton is about 90 miles (145 kilometers) north of Atlanta.
This news comes after February 22-26 poll conducted by Morning Consult/Politico shows that voters support arming teachers in the wake of the Florida school shooting.
The margin of support was 50% to 42%.
The poll also found that voters support “protecting the right of Americans to own guns” over “limiting gun ownership” by a margin of 46% to 42%.
What do you think should we arm our teachers?
