In a heated exchange with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas responded to former President Donald Trump’s call for action on the growing mystery of drone sightings. Trump took to Truth Social last Friday, asserting that the government either knows more about these incidents than they’re letting on or is failing to act decisively. He demanded transparency or, failing that, for the drones to be “shot down.”
Mayorkas: “Limited in Our Authorities”
When questioned about the government’s response, Mayorkas admitted, “With respect to the ability to incapacitate those drones, we are limited in our authorities.” His comment comes amid the growing drone hysteria and just days before the expiration of current drone-countering laws on December 20.

A Convenient Panic?
Critics, including several conservative commentators, are questioning the timing of these widespread drone reports, suggesting they might be fueling support for the controversial H.R.8610 Counter-UAS Authority Security, Safety, and Reauthorization Act of 2024. The bill seeks to expand the government’s surveillance and drone countering powers, but detractors argue it opens the door to Orwellian overreach.
Brad Wiegmann, DOJ’s deputy assistant attorney general for national security, emphasized during a recent subcommittee hearing, “The reason we need legal authority is that without it, use of the most effective types of drone detection and counter-drone technologies could violate criminal laws.” However, critics argue this is just another ploy to strip freedoms under the guise of security.
Trump Fires Back
Trump’s statement struck a chord with many Americans frustrated by the lack of action or clear answers. He wrote, “Mystery Drone sightings all over the Country. Can this really be happening without our government’s knowledge? I don’t think so! Let the public know, and now. Otherwise, shoot them down!!!”
