A Florida homeowner’s swift actions against two masked burglars in Manatee County have drawn praise from Sheriff Rick Wells, who used the incident to deliver a strong message against crime and illegal immigration.

The encounter ended with one of the suspects, Jorge Nestevan Flores-Toledo, a 27-year-old illegal immigrant from Mexico, fatally shot after breaking into the home.
Flores-Toledo’s accomplice, 39-year-old Michel Soto-Mella, also an illegal immigrant from Chile, fled the scene but was later apprehended with the help of K-9 units.
Sheriff Rick Wells didn’t mince words when addressing the incident. “This is the state of Florida,” Wells declared. “If you want to break into someone’s home, you should expect to be shot.” The sheriff commended the homeowner for his decisive actions, calling him a hero for protecting his family.
“This man knew something bad was about to happen, and he didn’t stall. He grabbed his firearm and acted to protect his loved ones,” Wells said.

Flores-Toledo had a criminal history, including a 2023 burglary arrest in Illinois for which he served four months before being paroled. He was labeled “armed and dangerous” at the time of the break-in.
