Breaking: Texas Dems Run to Illinois to Deny a Quorum for Redistricting—Abbott’s Response Could End Their Political Careers for Good
In a move that screams desperation and hypocrisy, more than 30 Texas Democrat lawmakers have fled the Lone Star State—again—this time to Illinois, in an attempt to block Governor Greg Abbott’s redistricting initiative by denying a quorum in the state House.
Yes, Illinois—the same state with some of the most blatantly gerrymandered congressional maps in America. You can’t make this stuff up.
The plan, reportedly coordinated with Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, was cooked up to stall what Democrats are calling a “Trump gerrymander,” despite the fact that the proposed Texas map is nowhere near as egregious as what Democrats have done in blue strongholds like Illinois and California.
“We’re leaving Texas to fight for Texans,” claimed Texas House Democratic Caucus Chair Gene Wu. In reality, they’re leaving Texans behind to protect their own power.
Governor Abbott isn’t taking this lightly. He’s given the runaway Democrats until 3 PM tomorrow to return. If they don’t, he’s prepared to declare their seats vacant and replace them altogether.
Attorney General Ken Paxton has also made it clear that arrests are not off the table. The Texas Constitution allows the state to track down absent lawmakers and compel their return—a move that Paxton and many Republicans are now openly supporting.
Fines of $500 per day are already being imposed, though few expect that to have any real effect. Left-wing donors will likely cover those costs. But the threat of political extinction? That might actually get their attention.
Abbott holds the ultimate card: he can call as many special sessions as he wants. If these Democrats want to camp out in Illinois forever, so be it. But the second they return, they could be marched back to Austin in handcuffs.
This time, the stunt may cost them more than headlines. It could cost them their seats—and their careers.
