Biden Slams Trump’s Tariffs as ‘Counterproductive,’ Seemingly Forgets His Own Administration Expanded Them (VIDEO)

President Joe Biden criticized President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed tariff plans on Thursday, labeling them as “counterproductive” during remarks in Nantucket, Massachusetts.

“I hope he rethinks it. I think it’s a counterproductive thing to do,” Biden said when addressing Trump’s intentions to impose steep tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico unless they take aggressive steps to curb illegal immigration and drug trafficking.

Trump’s plans, which include a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10% tariff on Chinese imports, are intended to incentivize neighboring countries to take more responsibility for border security and the fight against fentanyl smuggling. The tariffs are set to take effect on Trump’s first day in office.

However, Biden’s critique appears to overlook a glaring contradiction. His own administration expanded and maintained several of Trump’s original tariffs during his presidency, particularly those targeting China. Despite railing against Trump’s trade policies as a candidate, Biden upheld tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of Chinese goods, claiming they were necessary to protect U.S. workers and strengthen the economy.

Critics were quick to point out the irony of Biden’s statement. “Biden’s administration not only kept Trump’s tariffs in place but also broadened them in certain areas. The hypocrisy here is astounding,” one user commented on social media.

As Trump prepares to take office in January, his hardline economic and immigration policies are already drawing sharp reactions from world leaders and domestic critics alike. But judging by Biden’s remarks, it seems the current president is intent on ignoring his own track record while condemning Trump’s decisive approach.
